Ebony
Diospyros crassiflora
Dark brown to black hardwood known for hardness and density; used for fine veneers, inlay, and luxury items.
Density: 1030 kg/m³

Every board we produce is more than timber – it is a story. For more than sixty years, ancient trees lay submerged beneath Lake Volta, absorbing minerals that deepened their colour and tightened their grain. Submersion has given our wood rich browns, golds and reds with striking contrasts, and each piece is old‑growth, with tight rings and a history you can see and feel in your hands.
| Property | Volta Lake Submerged Timber | Inland Timber (Plantation) |
|---|---|---|
| Density & Hardness | Enhanced density from decades of mineral absorption; stronger and more durable | Standard density; more prone to dents and wear |
| Stability | Highly stable after kiln drying; minimal warping or cracking | Greater movement in service; higher risk of splitting and warping |
| Colour & Grain | Rich browns, golds and reds with striking grain contrasts due to mineralisation | Typical colours and grain for the species; less variation |
| Growth Rings | Old-growth logs with tight rings → superior strength and refined look | Younger logs with wider rings; less strong and less refined |
| Sustainability | Salvaged resource—reclaims "lost" timber without cutting live forests | Harvested from living forests; contributes to deforestation if unsustainably managed |
| Pest Resistance | Protected underwater; fewer insect and fungal defects | Exposed to pests during growth and storage; more defects |
| Market Rarity | Rare and internationally sought after; positioned as a premium material | Commonly available; less differentiation |
| Applications | Ideal for high-end furniture, bespoke interiors, flooring, veneer, musical instruments | Used for general construction and mid-range furniture |
